Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea)


Often used as a Christmas tree

  • The balsam fir is native to North America, where multiple indigenous communities used it for medicinal purposes, including as a disinfectant and as a cold remedy.
  • The balsam fir is threatened by pests and parasites including the eastern spruce budworm in North America and red heart rot in eastern Canada.
  • Balsam firs grow in very cold climates, including mountain tops, and can survive temperatures as low as -45 degrees Celsius.
