Black Elder (Sambucus nigra)
Named for its dark coloured berries.
- Although elder berries are toxic if consumed raw, they can be cooked to make foods such as soup, jams, and jellies.
- The tree is often used as a nesting habitat for birds, including warblers and hummingbirds.
- The black elder is very adaptable, and often grows in areas that have been disturbed by humans such as abandoned fields, roadsides, and railway banks.
