Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea)
The national tree of Ireland.
- The main difference between the sessile oak and the English oak is that the sessile oak’s acorns are not found on stalks, while its leaves are. In the English Oak, the opposite is true.
- The Pontfadog Oak, a sessile oak tree found in Wales, was estimated to be 1,200 years old when it blue over in 2013, making it the oldest tree in the UK. Samples of the tree were saved and planted in several different locations.
- The acorns of the oak are eaten by badgers and squirrels.
