Rowan (Sorbus)
Called the ‘Travellers Tree’ in European folklore because it was believed that it could protect those on a journey.
- The word rowan refers to a wide variety of trees and shrubs, with a range stretching all the way from Ireland to China.
- The rowan is part of the rose family along with apples, pears, strawberries, raspberries, and of course, roses.
- In Scotland and England, it was believed that the tree offered protection against witches. They were often planted near doors in Scotland for this reason.
