Giant Redwood

(Sequoidendron giganteum)

The largest tree species on Earth

  • The largest giant redwood, a tree in California’s Sequoia National Park called General Sherman is 275 foot tall and 36 foot wide.
  • Although the giant redwood is currently threatened by wildfires in its native California, it actually benefits from smaller fires that help it to release its seeds and clear away undergrowth. Proscribed burns have been successful in protecting the trees.
  • The longhorn beetle also assists with the trees reproductive process by laying eggs on the pinecones. When the larvae hatch, they drill holes that causes the tree’s seeds to be released.
