Common Beech (Fagus silvatica)

Used to make furniture and staircases

  • The beech tree typically has a natural lifespan of around 300 years, with the oldest known specimen being 500 years old.
  • The nuts from a beech tree can be ground to make flour and even used as a coffee substitute.
  • The beech has shallow roots that spread out widely, and form symbiotic relationships called ectomycorrhizas with fungi in the soil.
