Throughout the 20th century the Russell family collected a variety of specimen trees to display in their walled garden.

Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)
Originally came from China, where it is called the ‘water pine.’
• The Dawn Redwood is the only living species of its genus, and was once thought to be extinct, as scientists had found fossils before they found any living specimens.
• Unlike most conifers, the Dawn Redwood is Deciduous, meaning it drops its leaves in the Autumn.
• The tree grows best in wet conditions and is often found in river valleys.
Gingko (Gingko biloba)
Known as a ‘Living Fossil’ because of how long the species has existed.
• The Gingko tree is highly resistant to pollution and disease, and damage from weather or
insects. Ginkgo trees even survived the atomic bomb at Hiroshima.
• The Gingko tree has a symbiotic relationship with micro alga, a type of algae that lives inside its tissues.
• The oldest recorded Gingko tree is 3,500 years old.
